Applied Digital Geography and GIS
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a technology used by a growing number of businesses, industries, and government organizations to help them make better decisions.
Any data that have location can be combined, analyzed, and visualized using a GIS. Urban planning, health and social services, environmental management, utilities, retailing, banking, and all levels of government depend on large digital databases and GIS to support their day-to-day operations as well as their long-term strategic goals. Digital Geography provides the understanding of the special characteristics of spatial data and the analytical perspectives for spatial decision-making.
Recent advances in web mapping, the expanding applications of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Location-Based Services (LBS), and the increasingly diverse applications of GIS in the public and private sectors ensure that the strong demand for GIS professionals will continue in the future.
