Applied Digital Geography and GIS

Come to The Chang School Open House on March 30 and get your questions answered.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a technology used by a growing number of businesses, industries, and government organizations to help them make better decisions.

Any data that have location can be combined, analyzed, and visualized using a GIS. Urban planning, health and social services, environmental management, utilities, retailing, banking, and all levels of government depend on large digital databases and GIS to support their day-to-day operations as well as their long-term strategic goals. Digital Geography provides the understanding of the special characteristics of spatial data and the analytical perspectives for spatial decision-making.

Recent advances in web mapping, the expanding applications of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Location-Based Services (LBS), and the increasingly diverse applications of GIS in the public and private sectors ensure that the strong demand for GIS professionals will continue in the future.

The Chang School offers two certificates to assist you in your GIS career.

Our Instructors and Facilities

Our courses are taught by industry and academic leaders in an integrated lecture-lab environment. You will learn from experts who combine practical and theoretical knowledge of emerging trends in digital geography and GIS. Students in the Certificates in Applied Digital Geography and GIS enjoy access to the state-of-the-art GIS facilities offered by the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Ryerson University, a leader in GIS education in Canada.

Learning at a Distance

Using Ryerson’s online course delivery system, D2L Brightspace, and the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies’ Virtual Lab for remote access to the GIS software and data in the GIS lab, the Certificate in Applied Digital Geography and GIS can be completed from anywhere in the world via the Internet.
