1. What courses are offered in the Course Series in Hadoop, Python, and Tableau Big Data Tools, and what is the recommended order?

There are three courses offered in this course series. Choose two of the following courses to be eligible for a Professional Development Award from The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education. Required courses for the course series are as follows (select two):

We recommend that you take CKCS 155 and then one of CKCS 107 or CKCS 150.

3. Does the fee change if you are an international student?

The international fee rate for continuing education students is two and a half (2.5) times the regular student tuition fee for degree credit courses only.

4. Who is the target audience for this course series?

This course series is intended for current or aspiring adult professionals who have an interest in the subject for career advancement.

5. Are there any company affiliations or career placement assistance available as part of this course series?

There are no direct corporate associations or career placements available.

6. Is this course series completed online or in class?

For the 2017–2018 academic year, the courses in this course series can be completed in the in-class format. The courses take place in a computer lab.

7. How long will the course series take to complete?

You may choose how quickly you want to complete all the required courses. You may take two or more courses every term (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer).

9. Can I take more than one course in the evening and still hold my full-time job?

Yes. It is possible to take more than one evening course and still hold your full-time job. However, feel free to organize your schedule to suit your needs.

10. Can I substitute one of the courses in this course series for a different course offered at The Chang School?

No. There are no course substitutions allowed in this course series.

11. What prerequisites or professional experiences are recommended for this course series?

There are no prerequisites to enrolling in this course series. Students are encouraged to contact Anne-Marie Brinsmead, Program Director, Engineering, Architecture, and Science, at a2brinsmead@ryerson.ca for further clarification about course series requirements.

12. How do I enrol in this course series?

Step 1: If you are a new student, request a student ID.
Step 2: Activate your Ryerson online identity.
Step 3: Enrol in all desired courses. Visit the Dates for Enrolment section of Enrolment.
Step 4: Upon completion of two courses in the course series, email The Chang School at ce@ryerson.ca with your name, student number, and the course series you have completed. Upon verification, you will receive your Professional Development Award.

13. What are the Fall 2017, Winter 2018 and Spring/Summer 2018 term course enrolment dates?

14. To succeed in this course series, do I need to complete the courses in a specific order?

We recommend that you take CKCS 155 and then choose between CKCS 107 or CKCS 150.

15. Are any of the courses you offer available for substitution or transfer credit?

No. All courses in this course series must be taken at The Chang School and are not eligible for course substitution or transfer credit application.

16. Am I able to get financial aid?

The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education and the Continuing Education Students’ Association of Ryerson (CESAR) offer a wide range of awards, bursaries, and scholarships for students who are eligible. Visit Awards and Financial Aid and CESAR for more information. This course series does not qualify for OSAP.

17. What programming languages are used to teach this course series?

The course series is taught primarily using R and Python.

18. What technical skills are taught in this course series?

Technical proficiencies taught in this course series include the following:

  • Analytics: R, Hadoop, Tableau, MS-Excel (Advanced), Hadoop Administration Environment
  • Database systems: MS-Access (Intermediate)
  • Languages: R, Python

19. Are there any specific PC requirements needed to complete the coursework?

No. We understand that not everyone has a laptop to bring to class; consequently, we have lab sessions for each course where you use the university’s dedicated Big Data Analytics computer labs. However, there will be assignments that you will need to work on during your own time, either by using these computer labs or your own. All of the software used will be open source, so you will be able to download it from the Internet. The university does not provide technical assistance in setting up students’ personal computers for use in this program.

20. What laptop or tower PC computer configuration should I have if I wished to complete work similar to the coursework on my own PC?

You would need a PC laptop or PC computer (no MAC or Apple products) with:

  • Operating system: Windows 10; 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Processor: Intel®Core™i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz
  • Installed memory (RAM): 16.0 GB (15.9 usable) (NOTE: You need 16.0GB to run Hadoop.)

21. Which textbooks must I purchase for this series?

You will receive your textbook information on the Course Outline in the first week of class. Please do not pre-emptively buy any textbooks.
