Arts Program Area

Duration: 39 Hours
Fee: $621.14* (Payment in full is required at time of enrolment.)

This course gives students the opportunity to explore a range of community impact topics, which may include social change, entrepreneurship, community development, social needs research or related topics. Students will acquire an understanding of their area of focus and learn how ideas can be turned into action. A variety of learning approaches will be employed, including experiential learning and related innovative pedagogical techniques.

Note: Fall 2015 Topic: "From Social Challenges to Innovative Ideas." Learn about some of the major social challenges facing Canadian society and develop innovative ideas to address them. Work in CSSH 400 may even lead to a viable social venture. Students will meet with activists in key areas such as mental health, homelessness, sustainability/climate change, and social and civic inclusion to identify areas of potential innovation and develop new and innovative responses to them. Using a variety of creative instructional techniques, including critical and analytical thinking tools, case studies, practitioner debriefs, and enterprise planning, students will work in teams to become subject matter experts with respect to their chosen challenge, develop an out-of-the-box solution to it, and then “pitch” it to their fellow students and the community. Offered with Ryerson's SocialVentures Zone and Faculty of Arts.
