Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA)

Ryerson offers courses that are accredited by the HRPA and are required to qualify to write the National Knowledge Examination (NKE). Passing the knowledge exam is one of the requirements for the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation.

HRPA’s certification process has five components:

  1. Membership Requirement: Individuals must join HRPA and maintain continuous membership with HRPA until the certification process is complete.
  2. Coursework Requirement: An individual must achieve credit (an average of 70% in all courses with no individual subject grade below 65%) in the following academic subjects:
    • Human Resources Management
    • Organizational Behaviour
    • Occupational Health and Safety
    • Labour Relations
    • Compensation
    • HR Planning
    • Recruitment and Selection (Staffing)
    • Training and Development
    • Finance and Accounting
    The HRPA website lists the Ryerson courses recognized for credit in these subject areas.
  3. Exam Requirement: Applicants must successfully write and pass the National Knowledge Examination (NKE).
  4. Degree Requirement: Applicants must have a degree from a recognized educational institution. The degree need not be in Human Resources, however. Advanced degrees also count as degrees for the purposes of the degree requirement.
  5. Experience Requirement: Applicants must have accumulated at least three years of demonstrated experience in HR at a professional level.
